ANNOUNCEMENT
Ross Oaks has been a shiatsu patient of Kensen Saito for a long time. In his contribution to Kensen Saito’s book Shiatstu Doh, he writes about his switch from Swedish massage to shiatsu: “Swedish massage certainly loosens up your muscles and promotes better overall circulation, and for that I was thankful, but I was totally unprepared for how deeply shiatsu would go and how it would begin to hit me on levels I never dreamed possible. I started to notice things happening days, weeks and months after the treatments. One of the most immediate consequences was that I no longer needed my one-hour naps right after I got home from teaching. Somehow my energy levels held me until I went to sleep at night. This was just the beginning of a five-year relationship with a group of Chinese shiatsu therapists.” Ross now helps in operating the Shiatsu Academy of Tokyo for Kensen Saito.

Shiastu Diffusion Society (SDS) News

Meet the new SDS Chairperson Joseph Poon
To all SDS Members:
Please welcome Joseph Poon, our new SDS Chairperson.

On September 11, 2005, SDS held a general meeting to determine the future of SDS, I volunteered to assist Jim Williamson who is the Vice-Chairperson, to work with the Shiastu Diffusion Society meetings and on the Government issues presented at this time. Presently, Jim is living in Burlington, so it is not convenient for him to work with the Provincial and City officials to establish the detail required for the Municipal Planning and Transportation licensing standard application. This is how I became the Chairperson of the SDS. I planned to resolve some of these important issues facing shiastu and the Shiatsu Diffusion Society in the City of Toronto and Ontario in general. Together, Jim and I chose to work together to facilitate our plan to give shiatsu a stronger stance in Toronto. Youssef Elaridi, a Board Director, has also played an important role.

During the meeting, a number of tasks were articulated:
1. Establish SDS as a NOT-FOR-PROFIT organization.
2. Submit Municipal Planning and Transportation licensing standard application to enable SDS be a recognized association by the City.
3. Develop continuing education road map for 1100 hour member to full flush 2200 hour academic standing.
4. Continue working with the province to establish shiatsu authority in Ontario, and regulate shiatsu by legislation and act of the provice of Ontario.

At present, we have accomplished the first three tasks, awaiting the report of the City if the SDS is considered a recognized body for City Licensing.

I have good faith that our efforts and accomplishments will bring great success for the Shiatsu Diffusion Society.

Joseph Poon
SDS Chairman

Testimonials will also be featured of people with the particular condition discussed in the article who have benefitted from the treatments. Each article will be posted in the Application section of this website. An article on Relieving Stress with Shiatsu is now on this site in the Applications section. Click on the first circle. A PDF is made available for downloading in this section.

A new Mind-Body clinic has been set up at the Rocky View General Hospital. It was reported in Calgary’s Health and Wellness magazine, APPLE (September/October 2005). In the article written by Rob Walker, he describes the new clinic: “Patients are encouraged to relax with biofeedback, gentle breathing, massage, yoga, mediation, and shiatsu and spamud treatments which are not offered at the clinic itself. There are also adjunct programs in outdoor adventure, sailing and other reacreation.” In charge of operating this clinic is Dr. Bakal, professor emeritus at the University of Calgary and an adjuct professor in the university’s Deptartment of Medicine, and he “works with a small team including a psychiatrist, internatl medicine specialist, geriactric psychiatrist and nursing support. These health specialists come together to help individual with chronic illness manage their condition and restore wellness. Patients are covered under medicare but have to have a referral from a family doctor or specialist. “Mind-body clinics are gaining in popularity in health centres across North America” it also states in the article and this is the CHR’s attempt to include it as part of the range of wellness services, which is the “integration of mind, body and spirit and the recognition of the whole person,” as stated in the article by Linda Gray, Vice-President of the Northeast Community Portfolio.

As a side note, this article in the APPLE magazine was worth the read. It is an indication that shiatsu will become even more popular in the future.

Events
Future demonstrations will be announced as they come up.
